Fixing Bikes, Spreading Smiles and Summer Fun with Viva CalleSJ

Summer weekends are made for carefree, outdoors fun and enjoying the fresh air with friends, family, and neighbors. That’s why Viva CalleSJ, the Open Streets program that temporarily turns city streets into car-free spaces, is the perfect place to meet new people, support local businesses and enjoy the weekend!

Good Karma Bikes has supported their events for many years with our bike repair station. Our volunteers make quick repairs, like fixing a flat tire or re-setting a chain, that will get riders back on the road. We’re grateful to have been a part of all three events this year, spanning all across the city.

In April, we kicked off the start of the Viva CalleSJ season with an Eastside Quest. Our volunteers started strong, with two stations across the area. One of them was staffed exclusively by women from our Sisters in Cycling group! To top it all off, we enjoyed some amazing performances from musicians, vocalists and even BMX stunt riders. We couldn’t ask for a better start to the season, and we were excited to ride into the next event!

The FIFA World Cup amped up the excitement of our time with Viva CalleSJ in June. We were excited to meet San José locals and visiting soccer enthusiasts. Good Karma Bikes set up shop at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds to show people near and far our community’s diversity and spirit, all while making quick roadside repairs with a smile!

Into the Valley. The weather was perfect for community members to run, bike, skate and play throughout the streets. More than 20 volunteers, both experienced and new, worked to get over 400 people back on the road with quick repairs, keeping the fun going for friends and family alike.

We love Viva CalleSJ for their dedication to fostering connections and spreading the San José spirit. Our mission, to build community and empower people through bikes, perfectly aligns with Viva CalleSJ, making it an incredible avenue to spread some good karma.

We can’t wait for their next event, Viva Callecita, a smaller-scale Open Streets event with a shorter route and the same neighborhood fun! Mark your calendar for Sunday, November 8th and plan for some family fun in the fall sun!
